MATH 2753 - Linear Algebra

3 Credits
Linear Algebra is a study of linear vector spaces where topics include linear mapping and matrix representations, determinants, vectors and vector spaces, linear transformations, bases and orthonormality, Eigen values and Eigen vectors, and their applications. Computer software and graphing calculators will be used to enhance learning.

Prerequisite: MATH 2204 Applied Calculus  or MATH 2224 Calculus II*  

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Solve systems of linear equations. (GEO 2, 3)
2. Execute matrix operations including inverses, determinants, and other algebraic operations. (GEO 2, 3)
3. Describe and evaluate concepts involving vector spaces and subspaces, linear independence, span, basis, rank,
nullity, and linear transformation. (GEO 2, 3)
4. Determine eigenvalues and eigenvectors and solve eigenvalue applications. (GEO 2, 3)
5. Apply principles of matrix algebra to linear transformations. (GEO 2, 3)
6. Evaluate the dot product, norm, angle between vectors, and orthogonality of two vectors in R^n. (GEO 2, 3)
7. Calculate inner products and identify associated norms. (GEO 2, 3)
8. Create orthogonal and orthonormal bases: Gram-Schmidt process and use bases and orthonormal bases to solve
application problems. (GEO 2, 3)
9. Analyze and solve application problems in chemistry, economics, engineering, and computer science using linear
algebra concepts. (GEO 2, 3)
10. Use technology to collaborate, solve problems, represent data, and present solutions. (GEO 1,4)
