CHEM 2504 - Environmental Chemistry 4 Credits Environmental chemistry will incorporate the study of chemical entities and reactions in the air, water, and soil as well as their effects on human and other organismal health. Topics covered include: environmental chemistry of water pollution, water treatment, geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, air pollution, and hazardous materials. The lab component will consist of field activities and experiments to reinforce the concepts and ideas presented in lecture.
Lab Fee $50
Prerequisite: CHEM 2204 Chemistry II for Majors* ; MATH 1123 College Algebra* or MATH 1223 Pre-Calculus*
Course Level Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply quantitative problem-solving skills in lecture and lab to questions involving environmental chemistry. (GEO 1, 2, 3)
- Interpret graphical data and obtain chemically relevant conclusions related to environmental chemistry. (GEO 2, 3)
- Identify, evaluate, and describe chemical reactions and physical processes involving different chemicals in the environment. (GEO 1, 2, 3)
- Identify and describe the sources of common indoor air pollutants. (GEO 1, 3)
- Explain the chemistry of environmental issues and concerns posed by human and other organismal activity. (GEO 1, 2)
- Identify the effects of hazardous chemicals on the environment as well as on human and other organismal health. (GEO 3)
- Demonstrate professional behavior and maintain compliance with material safety both in the laboratory and off-site locations. (GEO 4)
