ALH 1313 - Introduction To Health Science 3 Credits An introductory course designed for pre-professional students exploring the health care industry. The course provides an overview of health care careers and pathways, foundational concepts of disease prevention and health promotion, workplace safety principles and procedures, and basic patient care skills. Students will gain hands-on experience with basic first aid techniques and the measurement of vital signs, while developing an understanding of professionalism, ethics, and safety within health care settings.
Course Level Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explore and compare health care career pathways by examining job roles, education and training requirements, and employment settings within the health care system. (GEO 1,2,3)
- Differentiate between historical and modern beliefs related to the causes, prevention, and treatment of disease. (GEO 1,2,3,4)
- Compare body system interrelationships and identify common diseases affecting each system. (GEO 1,2,3)
- Identify and evaluate cultural, developmental, and nutritional factors that affect healthcare delivery and health outcomes across the lifespan. (GEO 1,2,3,4)
- Demonstrate adherence to safety regulations, patient safety principles, and professional safety standards in healthcare settings. (GEO 1,2,3)
- Perform and record vital sign measurements and demonstrate foundational first aid knowledge and skills. (GEO 1,2,3,4)
