EMT 1376 - Emergency Medical Technician

This course prepares students to function as entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). It follows the 2021 National EMS Education Standards and NREMT guidelines to provide foundational knowledge and psychomotor skills in prehospital emergency care. Content includes anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, airway management, oxygen administration, trauma and medical emergencies, EMS operations, and special population care. Successful completion qualifies students for eligibility to take the National Registry EMT examination.

Prerequisite: Must be 18 years of age by the course end, have a GED or high school diploma, have no disabilities which could
preclude participation in all aspects of the program, and no record of felony convictions.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Apply foundational EMS knowledge-including anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and EMS systems-to deliver safe, evidence-based care within the EMT scope of practice. (PLO 1)
Perform systematic patient assessments across the lifespan, including scene size-up, primary and secondary assessments, vital signs, and ongoing reassessment. (PLO 2)
Manage airway, respiration, and ventilation needs using approved EMT-level equipment and techniques, including oxygen therapy and basic adjuncts. (PLO 3)
Provide appropriate BLS interventions for trauma, medical, and environmental emergencies using evidence-based practices. (PLO 4)
Demonstrate safe, effective EMS operations-including infection control, lifting and moving, scene safety, communications procedures, and basic incident management. (PLO 5)
Communicate and document patient care accurately and professionally through therapeutic communication,
structured handoffs, and complete prehospital care reports. (PLO 6)
Collaborate with EMS team members and other healthcare providers to ensure safe patient transfer, coordinated care, and effective teamwork. (PLO 7)
Exhibit professional, ethical, and culturally competent behavior consistent with EMT practice, including integrity, empathy, respect, and accountability. (PLO 8)
