NUR 2107 - Nursing Process III

7 Credits


This course integrates curricular concepts and current evidence-based practice with a focus on patient-centered care in maternal, pediatric nursing and women’s health. Students apply the nursing process and clinical decision-making to promote, maintain, and restore health for developmentally and culturally diverse patients and families across the lifespan.


Content emphasizes the integration of disease processes, physiological changes, behavioral health, and nutritional needs in the maternal, pediatric, women’s health and behavioral health settings. Students will further develop therapeutic communication skills, professionalism, and self-awareness to foster effective and goal-directed relationships. Quality and safety standards, legal and ethical considerations, and collaboration with the healthcare team are emphasized throughout theory and clinical experiences.


Clinical learning occurs in inpatient and outpatient settings, including acute care, maternal-child, pediatric settings. Morning, afternoon, evening, and/or weekend clinical hours may be required. Clinicals take place either off campus at an affiliated healthcare facility or on campus in the simulation center. A medication calculation test will be administered, and students must achieve a minimum score of 90% to pass the course.

Prerequisite: ENG 1113 English Composition I* NUR 1201 Critical Thinking Applications II NUR 1209 NUR 1209 - Nursing Process II NUR 1302 NUR 1302 - Current Concepts In Nursing  , BIOL 2244 Microbiology* , all passed with a grade of “C” or better.

Pre or Corequisite: PSYC 1103 General Psychology*  

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate caring behaviors with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team in the maternal, pediatric, and women’s health care settings. (PLO 1)
  2. With assistance, implement fundamental teaching and learning principles for the maternal, pediatric, and women’s health patients. (PLO 2)
  3. Collaborate with the interprofessional health care team, patients, families, and significant others to adapt the care environment, address unique maternal, pediatric, and women’s health needs, and promote
    continuity of care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. (PLO 2, 7)
  4. Apply critical thinking skills to manage and delegate care for maternal, pediatric, and women’s health patients. (PLO 3)
  5. Implement the nursing process and evidence-based practice to provide safe, quality care in the maternal, pediatric, and women’s health settings. (PLO 4)
  6. Utilize principles of growth and development in planning care for the maternal, pediatric, and women’s health patients. (PLO 2, 3, 5)
  7. Apply principles of nursing pharmacology to safely administer medications to maternal, pediatric, and women’s health patients. (PLO 4, 8)
  8. Apply the nursing process in response to the nutritional needs of the maternal, pediatric, and women’s health patient. (PLO 3, 4, 5)
  9. Deliver holistic, culturally sensitive care to diverse patients and families in the maternal, pediatric, and women’s health settings. (PLO 5)
  10. Use therapeutic communication and appropriate technology to provide patient care in the maternal, pediatric, women’s health settings, and other clinical and nonclinical settings with patients, peers, faculty,
    and the interprofessional health care team. (PLO 6)
  11. Demonstrate leadership and accountability in collaboration with the healthcare team in the maternal, pediatric, and women’s health care settings and classroom. (PLO 7)
  12. Identify legal and ethical issues and provide nursing care consistent with the role of the Associate Degree Nurse in acute care, maternal, pediatric, women’s health, and other clinical and nonclinical settings. (PLO 8)
