OREC 1022 - Wilderness Navigation

This course examines basic orienteering, topographical map reading, compass use and inland navigation before examining GPS navigation and introductory GIS plotting using ArcGIS software.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Explain fundamental concepts of outdoor navigation, including direction, distance, position, and terrain association. (PLO 5)
Interpret and analyze topographic maps, using contour lines, scales, and symbols to evaluate landscape features. (PLO 5)
Demonstrate accurate use of a compass, including bearings, triangulation, and orienting a map in the field. (PLO 5)
Apply route-planning techniques that incorporate maps, compasses, and terrain analysis to design safe and efficient travel routes. (PLO 1,5)
Utilize GPS devices and digital navigation tools effectively, while identifying their advantages, limitations, and reliability issues. (PLO 5)
Demonstrate risk management and decision-making skills in navigation scenarios, including strategies for staying oriented and responding appropriately when disoriented. (PLO 3, 7)
