OREC 1052 - Kayaking and Canoeing

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of kayaking and canoeing. Topics include paddling techniques, safety and rescue skills, equipment use, trip planning, and environmental stewardship. Emphasis is placed on skill development and responsible recreation practices. Students will participate in on-water sessions and may complete local paddling trips.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Identify and properly use equipment and safety gear associated with kayaking and canoeing. (GEO 3)
Demonstrate effective ingress/egress technique, proper directional paddling form, and safe launching, landing, and transporting of watercraft. (GEO 3)
Apply water safety practices, including capsize recovery, current identification, and navigation basics. (GEO 3)
Identify weather and environmental factors and how they impact the safe operation of watercraft. (GEO 3)
Demonstrate effective communication, safety, and leadership in group activities. (GEO 3)
Apply Leave No Trace principles of environmental conservation and sustainability in watersport activities. (GEO 3)
