OREC 1062 - Backpacking and Hiking

2 Credits
This course introduces the fundamentals of backpacking and hiking, with a focus on trip planning, navigation with a compass and map, gear selection, and Leave No Trace principles. Students will develop skills in trail travel, safety, and environmental awareness through classroom instruction and field experiences. Must be 18 years of age; may require overnight stay.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proper planning, packing, and essential gear selection for extended hiking and camping trips. (GEO 3)
  2. Identify and properly use gear and equipment associated with safety, food and water supply, tent camping, and clothing. (GEO 3)
  3. Demonstrate wilderness safety practices, including navigation, basic first aid, and emergency preparedness. (GEO 3)
  4. Identify climate and environmental factors, as well as participant ability, to determine risk assessment and ensure safety. (GEO 3)
  5. Demonstrate effective communication, safety techniques, and leadership in group activities. (GEO 3)
  6. Apply Leave No Trace principles of environmental conservation and sustainability while hiking and camping outdoors. (GEO 3)
