OREC 1101 - Watercraft Safety and Maintenance

This course will teach the fundamentals of boating safety, boat captaincy, basic watercraft maintenance (fuel/oil systems, fuses and electrical, propeller shafts and drive systems), as well as marina safety, dock lines, fuel handling and fire prevention. Students will receive Arkansas Game and Fish Boating Safety certification upon successful completion of exam.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Comply with Arkansas boating laws and demonstrate basic principles of boat captaincy in on-water activities. (GEO 3)
Locate and inspect watercraft electrical systems, fluids, spark plugs, and propeller shaft. (GEO 3)
Demonstrate a basic ability to replace fuses, spark plugs, and other maintenance components. (GEO 3)
Perform safe boating operations in a marina, including dock safety, rope lines, fuel, and fire safety. (GEO 3)
Apply the principles of boater safety requirements and assess risk based on weather and environmental factors. (GEO 3)
Apply Leave No Trace principles of environmental conservation and sustainability while on waterways. (GEO 3)
