OREC 1121 - Bicycle Mechanics I

1 Credits
This course covers the fundamentals of bike repair and maintenance, from understanding bicycle components to fixing flat tires, brake, gear, and chain adjustment, and regular maintenance duties. Students will be able to diagnose and repair common issues and keep a bike in safe working order upon completion.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of bicycle design and function, including frame geometry, drivetrains, brakes, and wheel systems. (GEO 3)
  2. Identify common bicycle tools, components, and materials, and demonstrate safe and proper use of tools. (GEO 3)
  3. Demonstrate basic maintenance skills, including cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting bicycles for wear and damage. (GEO 3)
  4. Perform basic repair tasks, such as fixing flat tires, adjusting brakes and derailleurs, and replacing chains or cables. (GEO 3)
  5. Apply troubleshooting techniques to diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate corrective actions. (GEO 3)
  6. Implement safety practices and standards during bicycle maintenance and repair to protect both the technician and the equipment. (GEO 3)
