OREC 2023 - Foundations of Outdoor Recreation

This course explores the foundations of outdoor recreation, including its history, ethics, legal considerations, and the role of conservation. Students will explore topics such as sustainability, public land use, and the social impact of recreation.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Explain the historical and philosophical foundations of outdoor recreation and leisure activities in the United States, and their role in shaping contemporary practices. (PLO 6)
Identify and analyze the social, cultural, and economic influences on recreation participation and service delivery across diverse populations. (PLO 1, 4)
Describe the structure, functions, and career opportunities within public, private, nonprofit, and commercial recreation organizations. (PLO 6)
Analyze contemporary issues and trends in outdoor recreation, including government policy, legal and ethical questions, sustainability, and accessibility. (PLO 1, 4)
Apply foundational concepts and terminology in the field of recreation to current trends, issues, and professional practices. (PLO 4, 7)
Demonstrate an introductory knowledge of professional skills, such as ethical decision-making, communication, risk assessment, and Leave No Trace principles relevant to recreation careers. (PLO 1, 7)
