OREC 2033 - Leadership in Outdoor Recreation

This course introduces the leadership styles, communication skills, and competencies required to successfully manage recreational activities. Focus on teamwork and group dynamics is stressed, as well as values, ethics, and risk assessment. Must be 18 years of age; requires overnight stay.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Explain foundational theories and principles of leadership as they apply to outdoor recreation settings. (PLO 2)
Identify and describe key leadership styles, roles, and responsibilities relevant to guiding groups in outdoor environments. (PLO 2, 7)
Demonstrate introductory group facilitation and communication skills that promote safety, cooperation, and positive group dynamics. (PLO 3, 7)
Apply basic risk management and decision-making strategies to outdoor leadership scenarios, including emergency preparedness. (PLO 2)
Examine ethical considerations and professional standards in outdoor leadership, including inclusivity and environmental stewardship. (PLO 1, 3)
