OREC 2112 - Trail Building and Maintenance II

2 Credits

Participants will work with leading industry experts to deepen their understanding of trail assessment, erosion control, drainage systems, tread repair, trail armoring, mountain biking feature construction, and sustainable trail design. This course also introduces the safe and effective use of power tools commonly used in trail maintenance, such as chainsaws, brush cutters, and power wheelbarrows.

Prerequisite: OREC 1111 Trail Building and Maintenance I or equivalent experience is required.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Analyze trail design principles and techniques to create sustainable, safe, and environment-preserving trails in varied terrains. (GEO 3)
Demonstrate advanced construction and maintenance skills, including grading, drainage structures, switchbacks, bridges, and erosion control measures. (GEO 3)
Apply project planning and resource management strategies, including budgeting, scheduling, and coordinating labor and materials for trail projects. (GEO 3)
Evaluate trail systems for safety, accessibility, and ecological impact, and develop recommendations for improvements or restorations. (GEO 3)
Implement leadership, team coordination, and professional standards during field-based trail projects, emphasizing safety, efficiency, and environmental ethics. (GEO 3)
