OREC 2132 - Mountain Biking II 2 Credits Designed for riders with basic mountain biking experience, this course builds on foundational skills to develop greater technical ability, confidence, and trail performance. Students will refine bike handling, cornering, climbing, and descending techniques while exploring more challenging terrain. The course also covers trail assessment, advanced safety practices, and bike maintenance. Regular rides and skills sessions emphasize progression, endurance, and responsible trail use.
Prerequisite: OREC 1131 Mountain Biking I or equivalent experience is required.
Course Level Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate intermediate technical riding skills, including navigating switchbacks, drops, modulating terrain, and controlled ascent/descent. (GEO 3)
- Use advanced shifting and braking techniques to safely ride in diverse trail conditions. (GEO 3)
- Perform intermediate bike maintenance and repairs, including derailleur adjustments, brake tuning, and wheel truing. (GEO 3)
- Analyze trail features and environmental conditions to make informed assessments of line choice, pace, and risk management. (GEO 3)
- Demonstrate safe group riding leadership, including group-specific planning, safety, and communication strategies. (GEO 3)
- Apply Leave No Trace principles of environmental conservation and sustainability while biking outdoors. (GEO 3)
