EMSP 1712 - Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

This course builds upon EMT-level knowledge to prepare students for advanced prehospital care. Topics include patient
assessment, advanced airway management, intravenous and intraosseous therapy, medication administration, cardiac
rhythm interpretation, and management of medical and trauma emergencies. Instruction integrates anatomy and
physiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, and professional, legal, and ethical responsibilities. Didactic, laboratory,
clinical, and field experiences are aligned with the 2021 National EMS Education Standards and CoAEMSP 2025
Policies.

Prerequisite: Current State of Arkansas EMT Licensure.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Apply anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and medical/legal concepts to provide safe, evidence-based AEMT-level care. (PLO 1)
Perform scene size-up, primary and secondary assessments, and ongoing evaluations to determine field impressions and treatment priorities. (PLO 2)
Manage airway, oxygenation, and ventilation using AEMT-level techniques, including supraglottic airway devices and respiratory support. (PLO 3)
Establish IV/IO access, calculate correct dosages, and safely administer medications and fluids within AEMT protocols. (PLO 4)
Interpret vital signs, clinical findings, and ECG rhythms permitted within the AEMT scope to support accurate decision-making. (PLO 6)
Provide AEMT-appropriate interventions for medical, trauma, and environmental emergencies, adjusting care based on patient condition. (PLO 5)
Integrate pathophysiology and assessment findings to anticipate complications and adapt interventions in dynamic environments. (PLO 5,6)
Demonstrate scene safety, infection control, patient handling, and effective crew resource management. (PLO 7)
Operate effectively within ICS/NIMS and contribute appropriately during mass-casualty or high-stress events. (PLO 7)
Communicate accurately and professionally through therapeutic communication, structured handoffs, and professional interaction with healthcare team members. (PLO 8)
Document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses accurately and legally in prehospital care reports. (PLO 8)
Demonstrate ethical practice, cultural humility, accountability, and behaviors consistent with the Arkansas AEMT scope of practice. (PLO 9)
