ALH 2123 - Patient Care Technician 3 Credits This course prepares students for entry-level employment as Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings. Instruction includes foundational nursing skills, patient hygiene and mobility assistance, vital signs, infection control, specimen collection, electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, and phlebotomy procedures. Emphasis is placed on patient safety, professionalism, communication, and ethical standards in healthcare environments. Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will be eligible to sit for the Patient Care Technician certification through the National Healthcare Association.
Course Level Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate foundational patient care skills (GEO 1,3,4)
- Accurately obtain and document vital signs (GEO 1,3,4)
- Apply principals of infection control and standard precautions (GEO 2,3)
- Perform basic phlebotomy and EKG procedures (GEO 1,2,3,4)
- Demonstrate safe patient mobility transfers (GEO 1,2,3,4)
- Successfully complete the CPCT certification exam (GEO 1,2)
