RAD 1303 - Introduction To Radiography

3 Credits
This course will consider important aspects of the profession of radiologic technology for the beginning radiologic technology student. Topics will include basic radiation protection, the history of radiologic technology, an overview of the profession, the production of radiographic images, patient care, and professional ethics and medico-legal considerations toward defining the role of the radiographer as a member of the health care team.

Prerequisite: Program Admission

Corequisite: RAD 1404 Radiographic Procedures I RAD 1502 Clinical Education I  

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the professional setting and responsibilities of a radiographer. (PLO 2, 8)
  2. Exhibit clear and respectful communication with patients and families by actively listening, using culturally sensitive language, and adapting communication styles to meet diverse cultural needs. (PLO 2, 8)
  3. Implement fundamental principles of radiation protection and safety. (PLO 5)
  4. Prioritize the essential components of patient care expected of radiographers. (PLO 2, 8)
  5. Identify and demonstrate infection control practices essential to radiographers, with a focus on disease prevention within healthcare settings. (PLO 4)
  6. Identify and apply electrical safety measures, spill response protocols, fire safety protocols, and apply proper body mechanics specific to hospital settings. (PLO 9, 11)
