PE 1523 - Introduction to Sports Management

3 Credits
An examination of the broad spectrum of career opportunities available in athletic/sport management. Special emphasis on career planning, sport management terminology, and an overview of specific skills and experience required for professional preparation in athletic leadership. Also discussed are the challenges athletics programs face at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define sports management and discuss the variety of careers available within the industry. (GEO2, 3)
  2. Identify and exhibit critical athletic leadership skills and attitudes. (GEO 2, 3, 4)
  3. Evaluate major challenges in various segments of the sports industry. (GEO 2, 3)
  4. Explain the relevance of ethical, legal, and sociological concepts to the management of sport.(GEO 2, 4)
  5. Discuss theories of management, leadership, and organizational behavior and how these theories apply to sports enterprises. (GEO 2, 3)
  6. Identify research questions in sports management, analyze and interpret published research in sports management. (GEO 1, 2, 3)
