EMSP 2215 - Paramedic II

This course expands upon the knowledge and skills acquired at the Advanced EMT level and develops the advanced
competencies required of the paramedic. Emphasis is placed on integrating complex pathophysiology with advanced
assessment, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based decision-making across a broad range of medical and trauma
emergencies. Students analyze and apply advanced concepts in cardiology, electrocardiographic interpretation, and
cardiovascular pharmacology while incorporating principles of respiratory, neurological, endocrine, and multisystem
pathophysiology into patient management.

The course includes comprehensive instruction in paramedic-level pharmacology, including indications,
contraindications, therapeutic actions, dosage calculations, and administration of a wide range of medications within
national and state paramedic practice guidelines. Students further develop operational leadership skills in areas such as
EMS communication, incident management, safety and wellness, operational readiness, and interprofessional
coordination.

Through scenario-based learning, case study application, and advanced psychomotor practice, students synthesize
AEMT foundations with higher-level paramedic competencies to formulate differential diagnoses, prioritize complex
interventions, and manage critical patients in dynamic prehospital environments. Successful completion prepares
learners for subsequent paramedic clinical rotations and field internship experiences. Didactic, laboratory, clinical, and
field experiences are aligned with the 2021 National EMS Education Standards and CoAEMSP 2025 Policies.

Prerequisite: Current State of Arkansas AEMT Licensure and successful completion of EMSP 1712 Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Integrate complex pathophysiological concepts-including multisystem trauma, shock, special populations, and disease progression-to guide clinical judgment in high-acuity patient presentations. (PLO 1)
Analyze assessment findings, mechanism of injury, epidemiological factors, and risk indicators to generate differential diagnoses for trauma, medical, and special-population emergencies. (PLO 1,2)
Perform comprehensive trauma, medical, obstetric, pediatric, geriatric, and special-population assessments,integrating findings into prioritized treatment plans. (PLO 2, 9)
Manage airway and ventilation using paramedic-level interventions-including advanced airway devices, waveform capnography, ventilatory support, and decision-making regarding airway strategies. (PLO 3)
Implement advanced cardiovascular management strategies, including ECG interpretation within the paramedicscope, electrical therapy, and administration of paramedic-level medications. (PLO 1, 3)
Evaluate patient response to interventions during dynamic, evolving scenarios and adjust treatment strategies indicated by evidence-based practice and protocol-driven decision-making. (PLO 4)
Apply incident command system principles, hazard recognition, triage methods, and resource management to lead EMS operations during complex or mass-casualty incidents. (PLO 5)
Coordinate care by communicating effectively with patients, families, EMS team members, receiving facilities, and medical control while demonstrating structured handoff and accurate information flow. (PLO 6)
Document assessments, interventions, clinical impressions, and patient outcomes accurately, legally, and in compliance with EMS standards for trauma and special-population calls. (PLO 6, 9)
