EMSP 2804 - Paramedic III Capstone

4 Credits

This course serves as the capstone experience of the Paramedic Program. Under the supervision of a preceptor,
students function as team leaders during field internships, integrating all cognitive, psychomotor, and affective
competencies. Emphasis is placed on clinical decision-making, scene leadership, interprofessional collaboration, and
preparation for the National Registry Paramedic examination.

Prerequisite: EMSP 2215 Paramedic II

Course Level Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Lead a prehospital team in providing advanced life support across diverse patient populations while demonstrating effective scene management, resource coordination, and interprofessional collaboration. (PLO 5,6,9)
Integrate assessment findings with complex pathophysiology, cardiology, and pharmacology to formulate, prioritize, and execute evidence-based treatment plans during field encounters. (PLO 1,2,4)
Demonstrate independent clinical judgment and leadership in high-acuity, rapidly evolving situations, including critically ill and multi-system trauma patients. (PLO 1,4,5)
Manage advanced airway, cardiovascular, trauma, and pharmacologic interventions independently under preceptor supervision while meeting paramedic scope and safety standards. (PLO 3,9)
Evaluate patient response to interventions and modify treatment plans dynamically based on clinical reasoning, protocols, and changing patient conditions. (PLO 4, 9)
Communicate effectively with EMS partners, medical control, healthcare teams, patients, and families through structured reports, therapeutic communication, and interprofessional collaboration. (PLO 6)
Document assessment findings, interventions, medical decision-making, and outcomes accurately, thoroughly, and in compliance with legal, ethical, and agency standards. (PLO 6, 7)
Exhibit professional, ethical, culturally responsive, and patient-centered behavior consistent with national paramedic practice standards. (PLO 7)
Apply operational readiness, safety, risk mitigation, and wellness principles to ensure safe and effective functioning in unpredictable field environments. (PLO 5,8)
Engage in reflective practice, case review, and quality improvement processes to strengthen clinical performance and promote lifelong learning. (PLO 8)
Demonstrate readiness for independent practice by successfully performing in the Team Lead role, meeting all affective, psychomotor, and cognitive expectations under preceptor evaluation. (PLO 9)
Complete all CoAEMSP-defined Team Lead, psychomotor competency, and summative evaluation requirements necessary for graduation and eligibility for the National Registry Paramedic examination. (PLO 6,9)
